The Mental Health Benefits of Yoga

A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Susan Turner has a private practice in New York City. Outside of her professional life, Dr. Susan Turner enjoys reading and staying fit by running, training with weights, and practicing yoga.

In addition to its physical benefits, regular yoga practice has been shown to promote mental health. Like other stress-reduction techniques, yoga can help relieve anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Research has also shown that yoga could help provide relief for veterans and active-duty service members dealing with post-traumatic stress.
By reducing muscle tension and calming the nervous system, yoga can trigger a biochemical response that results in a state of deep rest and relaxation. Improvements in mood and behavior and enhanced mindfulness are other purported mental benefits of yoga.
With a growing body of research focused on yoga’s psychological benefits, many mental health professionals are using yoga as a therapeutic intervention. Although it can’t replace traditional psychotherapy and counseling services, yoga may be able to help improve certain disorders when used as a complementary treatment.
